Reading an article shared by Kate Petty in Diigo ICT group which is about ‘Getting started with students and teacher created E-book”, I am thinking about the new challenges and tasks that teacher needs to equipped themselves in order to meet the standard of the changes of trend in education whether it is preschool, primary or secondary. In the article, it states that teacher needs to become more proficient in mobile learning pedagogical approach to meet the changing demands of the learners. It requires thorough understanding of mobile technologies hardware, software and operating system (OS). Looking at Malaysian preschool, even in my current kindergarten, majority of the teachers are facing problem just to ‘upload’ photos to facebook, what more about understanding the mobile technologies. However, after spending sometimes talking to them, I realized that they put greater emphasis on how children could learn through discovering and manipulating materials rather than ICTs. Thus, this would be a constraint of the school.

ICT in the early years

Thank you to Carmen Gambe who has shared a meaningful post regarding on ICT for early years. The websites contains a lot of links that provide different educational games cater for pre-school children up to 12 year-old students. One of the websites, Cyber kidz that I explore provides learning games which involve the learning areas of math, English and science. If you were to teach young children about air, water and land transports, a game named, “Means of transport” might be helpful.  The transportation characters are interactive and the language used is easy understood by the children. Another website that I found useful and interesting is Storyline Online. It is a website that provides various animated storytelling from some of the famous children picture books.

Authentic learning

This article discusses about the authentic learning supported by technology. Over here, I will do a summary on what is the article about. A very important criteria that create authentic learning is the environment. The context of the learning environment must be practical and relevant to real life. Next, it would be the activities that giving enough support of collaborative construction of knowledge (Herrington & Kervin 2007). Herrington and Kervin (2007) have given some insightful examples on how teacher could use technology in an authentic way which takes in the consideration of context, activities, expert performance, multiple roles and perspectives, reflection, collaboration, articulation, coaching and scaffolding, assessment and professional learning. For each criteria mentioned above, an informative sample is given to guide the teachers in their planning progress.

The TIP model

In week 9 learning path, I have been introduced to the TIP model  and it has thought me how to plan ICTs rich lessons.  Planning ICT rich lessons have become more and more important compared to last time, because it is to enrich and enhance student learning.  The TIP model is good in a way that it can help me check my purpose, the effectiveness of using ICT, the possible activities that I can carry out in my real teaching experience. Very often, I will think that ICT is used as a support learning tool and at the same time, I am struggling to find a reason on why do I need to integrate ICT in student learning if there is a better resource. But, with the professional experience that I am required to undergo, I believe it will be a good opportunity for me to really understand on the purpose of integrating ICT in my teaching.

An award winning resource

Hsing Hua has shared an interesting ICT resource which I think is quite new to myself too!! It is called  Bee-bot which enables children to improve their skills in directional language. A sample  video on YouTube on how Bee-bot is  being used in the classroom is shown and I found that it is very fun for children to play with it. Besides that, Bee-bot could also be integrated for numeracy classes because the skills of counting and determining direction are involved.

A lot of us (including myself) often think that ICT is just a tool that we used to support student’s learning. For example, using YouTube to show videos, to teach a new song, or even used to tell a story. Besides that, online software such as the kidz page, fun brain and others are providing educational game to children in helping to learn more happily.  Deborah has shared a very interesting topic which is about integrating ICT into children’s play. She has shared about some of the similar experience or development that a child would get from physical play and when using ICT. Regardless what it is, I believe that there are pros and cons on how children are engaged in the learning.

A brand new idea

Wow, really thank you Deborah for sharing such an amazing post regarding on Electronic Field Trip.  After reading Deborah‘s post, I choose to explore more on what is Electronic Field Trip about. It is a good website for teacher to use the resources with children who do not have the opportunity to go for real field trip. For example, I watch a video on Electronic field trip to the Dentist, which is about a group of students visiting the dentist. The video covered some topics include how to brush and floss, how eating healthy food helps your teeth, the importance of regular checkup, and so on.  The video is very interactive and it can be easily understood by the students. It has also spark out some new ideas in me about how could I carry out lesson during my practicum.

Newspaper and E-news

Do you enjoy reading physical newspaper or newspaper online? There are different advantages and disadvantages for both of these reading materials. Looking at people around me, I realized the older generation will prefer to read through physical newspaper. However, the Gen-Y members are no longer reading physical newspaper. wiseGeek (2013) has explained that Generation Y children who is born in the late 1980s or afterwards are also called the Millennials- the Internet Generation. Hence, there is no surprise that the Gen-Y members prefer the information to be instant, personalized and interactive which mentioned by Patrick– a millennial and blogger. Gen-Y is so getting use to ‘google‘ for information or news. There is no right or wrong of which to choose, but it is more on how to get a balance from it. In this century, we need the internet to help us get worldwide information but we also need the physical newspaper or book to get more reliable source. To me, I would still prefer to read the physical newspaper because I find that it is more comfortable and enjoyable compared to E-news.

My TPACK

After reading this article “What is TPACK”,  I have understood better about the different types of knowledge. I am also able to reflect upon my teaching experiences on which knowledge I have more. For technology knowledge, I only have very basic knowledge on how to integrate ICT into children learning. I am able to analyse and integrate simple ICT tools such as computer, printer and internet in my teaching. For content knowledge, I am better in this part basically it is because of my learning course. I am able to apply what I have learnt in college into real-life teaching and it helps me to understand better on how children learn. In terms of pedagogical knowledge, it is also due to my teaching experience that helps me to be better in this part.

Looking at combining two knowledge, I have deeper knowledge on pedagogical and content knowledge (PCK). In school, we have teacher’s meeting once a week and this meeting is to let teacher discuss the problem or challenge they encounter in teaching. This will influence my pedagogical and content knowledge because through the discussion in the meeting, it always help me to construct new knowledge and reflect on the effectiveness of my current teaching approach and content.

21st Century Education

I have read an essay about “What is 21st century education”. 21st century education does not only focuses on student’s motivation and interest towards learning, but it is about how education keep up to the trend in the new millennium. ICTs are one of the powerful tools and resources that engage and ensure success in student’s learning. 21st Century School (2010) has stated the important aspects of the new millennium learning classroom which include the use of multimedia and technology, global classroom, integrated and project-based learning and others. Erica has shared a video about “Learning and motivation”  which I think it is the true voice of students. Students need to be engaged in a challenging and resourceful learning environment in order to keep them motivated in their learning.  Integrated learning therefore play a vital role in the learning because it is to provide a holistic education to the students.
